Photos From the Palouse
By Brian Auer • June 4th, 2007Well, the kids and I made it to Idaho in one piece – it was a long day though. 12 hours of travel with a two year old and a four year old isn’t exactly my idea of fun, but the kids were on their best behavior. No pictures from that day (Saturday) because I was a little tied up keeping track of three backpacks and two kids.
I did go out yesterday (Sunday) with my Dad and Brother just to get some photos. We went on a photo safari across the Palouse in search of old barns — my Dad has been working on a barn theme. We did a 200 mile round trip from Rathdrum to Moscow and back again, but on two different roads so we could maximize our barn sightings.
Most of the barns were drive-by’s because they were on people’s property or there was no where to stop on the highway. My Dad was taking the drive-by shots while my brother drove and I scoped the next barn. He got quite a few shots for his collection. We did manage to find a few barns that were accessible and abandoned, so we got to get out of the car and take some good shots.
I’ll try to update the blog at least one more time before I take off to Monterrey on Thursday for a business trip. There’s a chance that I’ll go on another photo outing before leaving, but even if I don’t I’ll find something to write about. Now back to being on vacation…

Oh, nice shots! I love that first one.
Thanks, that’s one of my favorites too. The sky turned out a really nice blue and the clouds lined up just right for a nice swooping arc across the sky. I have a little more work to do on these photos before I toss them up on Auer PhotoWorks and Flickr — these just had some basic editing done to them. Although they’re not bad as-is.
I love the countryside. What fisheye/wide-angle lens were you using?
Thanks! I was using my 10-20mm Sigma lens. The first four shots are at the 10mm end of that lens. The last two shots were probably with my 105mm macro or my 18-200mm zoom.
The clouds in the first and third ones are incredible for these shots. That massive arc is just gorgeous.
I read something on one of your other posts about you moving to San Diego shortly. Good luck! I’ve moved more times than I can count; it’s always stressful, but it’s such a good feeling when you’re done.
Thanks Andrew, those clouds saw the camera come out and they behaved very nicely. I was pretty excited when I looked through the viewfinder and saw the arc in the sky.
And I agree about moving being stressful. It’s one of the things I really hate doing. Luckily my parents are willing to watch the kids for the next month or two while we get things packed and moved.
I just love barn photos.
I think weathered wood and rust are the best subjects.
Great shots – love the simplicity of the first shot and the angle on the third..
