yay! hail to film! :) love this article . and love your sarcasm. couldn't agree much with you about loving the process of waiting the outcome of your shots, treasure each shot you got and really think about your composition and get the right shot! and just love the surprises that you'll get! .

didnt say digital sucks, they are good to start with but if you think you want something more serious. and fun, yes. try film . join the crowd!

Haha Brian, I love your sense of humor. I read the first post and I was kind of confused because it sounded like something you wouldnt write. Then I got the fact that you were being sarcastic and it clicked. However this follow up post where you are setting your readers straight it even more funny. The satire is doubly enforced and it makes it more humorous. I love film photography as well and hope that the art does not die with the cheapening of DSLRs

Film and old stuff is so great!

I was at a demonstration in town the other day. Newspaper photographers were there with big new cameras. They gave me strange looks. I had manual lenses, an old Zeiss from the 70's. Then I took up a rangefinder from the 60's. Next, the folding/bellow Isolette 120-format camera from early 50's! Haha, they must have thought I was from the stoneage. They had bigger cameras. Big peni***, opps sorry lenses, with major hoods.

The next day I looked in the papers website. God, their photos were crap (reeeaaaally bad)! I had quite a good laugh ;)

Yay! Another film convert! I suggest checking out the "I shoot film" group on flickr - they have heaps of advice for new users to film. If you can't find what you need there, find me on flickr and maybe I can help :)

I am one of the newbies who never learned film. I itch to go out and buy a film camera when I read things like this. I would have not picked up on a lot of the Sarcasm as I don't know film well. I think that the haters that got all worked up may not have much experience with digital.

Leaving that said, I think I will go browse e-Bay and find a used film body.

Agree on the cost of film. Its not as much as people make it out to be. People think if they don't go digital that they won't have the money, or that they have to be sparing about their shots like you said. Silly silly silly!

To this day, my favorite of all is Fujichrome 50 ISO Velvia.. ah.. those were simply awesome. Sure, I can modify my digital shots to mimick the rich saturated colours Velvia provides... but slide offers something digital does not.. the illusion of depth (when viewing on a light table or through a projector, the scene looks so '3d' in the sense of depth). Digital fails on this count.

I also had to be very selective in what I shot when shooting slide film. Nowadays, I can be as careless as I want. This can work for or against me.. If I'm in a serious mood and want to learn, the digital format does offer me extreme flexibility (I can simply delete what doesn't work and move on).. but when shooting slide, I pay far more close attention to details and really try my best to get the best shots (no room for fooling around here IMHO).

God bless Velvia!

Nice article. Nothing beats medium format 6x6 and even old (1920's) large format glass negatives kill anything digital today hands down.
