  1. The front element thing makes a good point: you need a lot of damage on the fron telement itself before it starts to really impact the image. But the farther you get away from it, and the more you stop down, the more it will impact. So if you use a filter it’s a lot more important to keep that clean than it is to clean the front element itself. It also means that to some degree it depends on the specific lens design exactly how much impact a scratch or mark on the front will have.
